Vulcan Materials Company Wins 2003 Mining Stewardship Award
RALEIGH - The N.C. Mining Commission has chosen the Vulcan Materials Company’s Cabarrus Quarry as the winner of the 2003 Mining Stewardship Award for Outstanding Public Outreach and Environmental Enhancement for exceptional efforts in wildlife habitat enhancement and community outreach and education.
The Mining Commission will present the award at its meeting scheduled for February 26 in Raleigh. The 281-acre Cabarrus Quarry has supplied construction aggregates for the rapidly urbanizing northern Charlotte area for over 15 years.
The Cabarrus Quarry is a prominent example of how resource extraction can take place in an environmentally responsible fashion. In order to blend its operation into the surrounding environment, Vulcan Materials Company has placed several areas under wildlife management programs in conjunction with input from the national Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC). In addition to the national level WHC certification, the Cabarrus Quarry is the first quarry in North Carolina to receive certification under the North Carolina Wildlife Federation’s Wildlife and Industry Together (W.A.I.T.) program.
The Cabarrus Quarry also plays host to numerous school tours of the quarry property. Scout groups routinely assist with the construction and management of the wildlife programs and use the WHC/WAIT wildlife habitat areas for camping and as outdoor classrooms.
The Cabarrus Quarry has received several other national awards for its achievements.
The Mining Commission is the rulemaking body for mining activities in North Carolina. The nine-member commission is appointed by the governor.
