Wetland certification issued for proposed Anson County landfill

RALEIGH -– State regulators have approved plans to fill about half an acre of wetlands and redirect 1,085 feet of stream as part of the proposed, 1,200-acre Anson County landfill project near Wadesboro.

The Division of Water Quality on Monday approved the request from Chambers Development of North Carolina Inc. for the 401 water qualty certification.

Tommy Stevens, director of DWQ, said the company has proposed to restore approximately 2,000 feet of stream – roughly twice the mitigation requirement. The company has also proposed to restore nearly an acre of forested wetlands, he said, adding that state regulations only require wetlands restoration if an acre or more are impacted.

Concurrence on the wetlands certification is also needed from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. In addition, the N.C. Division of Waste Management is currently reviewing application for the actual landfill, where trash is to be placed on about 133 acres of the overall site.

DWQ and the Division of Waste Management held a joint public hearing July 13 on the proposed landfill. Fifty-three people spoke at the hearing and another 48 submitted written comments over the next 30 days. Hearing officers reviewed the comments on the wetlands certification and recommended approval Sept. 22.
