Chevron Advisory Committee to Meet in Raleigh

RALEIGH - The Chevron Offshore Advisory Committee will hold its first meeting Tuesday, March 17, to discuss issues relating to Chevron U.S.A.’s proposal to drill for oil and natural gas off the North Carolina coast.

The committee was formed in February to help the state identify issues of public concern and decide which issues should be studied first.

"We are committed to giving this proposal a thorough review and to protecting our coastal area for the people of North Carolina," said Wayne McDevitt, Secretary of the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources. "The advisory committee will help us ensure that our review includes the public’s concerns."

Chevron announced in September 1997 that it wants to drill one exploratory well about 45 miles northeast of Cape Hatteras. The company has not submitted an actual drilling proposal at this time; however, Chevron has told the state that it would like to drill as early as 2000.

The committee is made up of two representatives each from the Coastal Resources Commission, Environmental Management Commission and the Marine Fisheries Commission, and one member each from Dare and Carteret counties.

The meeting is at 1:30 p.m. in room 1D240 of the Parker-Lincoln Building, 2728 Capital Blvd. In Raleigh. For more information, contact Bryan Pruitt at the N.C. Division of Coastal Management at (919) 733-2293.
