More than $700,000 being invested to divert construction and demolition material from North Carolina landfills
Raleigh - Some of North Carolina's business, industry, and governments
are investing more than $700,000 to divert approximately 42,000 tons of
construction and demolition (C&D) material per year from the state's
landfills.
Investments include $278,700 being awarded in the form of grants from
the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources' (DENR)
Division of Pollution Prevention and Environmental Assistance (DPPEA).
This state funding will support 17 public and private sector projects
for three different project categories: mixed C&D processing, source
separated recovery, and market development. Matching funds totaling
$427,000 will be made by grant recipients.
"Construction and demolition debris comprises about thirty percent of
North Carolina's waste stream," said Gary Hunt, DPPEA's division
director. "Diverting these wastes from landfills will help sustain the
state's healthy environment."
This is the second grant round being supported by DENR. Altogether,
DENR has provided financial assistance of about $500,000 to North
Carolina business, industry, and governments for C&D diversion projects.
