Water Supply And Wastewater Grant Filing Period Extended
RALEIGH - Because of the devastation caused by Hurricane Floyd, the application filing period for two programs that provide funds to address municipal water and wastewater system needs has been extended by 60 days, from Sept. 30 to Nov. 30.
The North Carolina Clean Water Revolving Loan and Grant Program and the State Bond Loan Program are part of the Clean Water Bond Bill passed last year. Approximately $65 million in grants is available for water supply projects and $57 million for wastewater needs. Bond loans available for each program exceed $140 million. Federal low interest loans are also available. Program funds are earmarked to help local governments repair and improve water supply systems and wastewater collection and treatment, and to undertake water conservation and reuse projects.
"Floyd has dramatically changed the scope of water supply and wastewater projects that need to be addressed," said Bill Holman, DENR Secretary. "Applicants and their engineers will need time to evaluate the situation and make necessary adjustments to their plans."
Applicants who can file by Sept. 30, the original deadline, are encouraged to do so; those applicants will benefit from a longer review and feedback time.
Bobby Blowe, chief of the Division of Water Quality's Construction Grants and Loans Section emphasized, "This is a one-time rule change. The programs will revert to the original application filing deadlines for the next cycle."
