Funds Available for Tree Planting in the Aftermath of Hurricane Fran
RALEIGH -- Financial assistance is still available for forest landowners looking to replant trees lost to Hurricane Fran.
The North Carolina Division of Forest Resources’ (NCDFR’s) Fran Reforestation and Rehabilitation Program can reimburse eligible participants up to 40 percent of the cost of replanting trees lost to Fran or for rehabilitating hurricane-damaged tree stands.
To participate, the forest land involved must be damaged by Hurricanes Fran or Bertha and be located in one of the 57 counties declared a federal disaster area by President Clinton. In addition, landowners must have an NCDFR-approved forest management plan for the timber stand involved. NCDFR foresters will work with landowners to come up with a management plan if they do not have one in place. The program is designed to assist non-industrial forest landowners.
The program is similar to the NCDFR’s regular Forest Development Program, which also offers a 40-percent cost-sharing incentive to landowners who want to plant trees for commercial use.
To apply for the Fran Reforestation and Rehabilitation Program, interested landowners should contact their local county ranger, who is listed in the telephone directory.
