Clearing Debris from Hurricane Floyd's Flood
RALEIGH -- Nash County will have a household hazardous waste (HHW) collection event Saturday, Oct. 9, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. The main location for the HHW drop-off center is Nash County Convenience Station No. 5, which is located on Old Carriage Road. (Directions: Take Red Oak Exit off the U.S. 64 Bypass to Old Carriage Road near Nash Tech Community College.) Nash County will also have nine other collection sites. To learn more about these sites, contact the county's recycling coordinator or solid waste office.
The State Emergency Response Team (SERT) recommends that people collect their HHW for drop off rather than putting these items with other household garbage that goes to landfills.
HHW includes items such as:
Kitchen and bathroom cleaning products and polishes
Automotive products (gasoline, antifreeze, batteries, used oil)
Insect and rodent killers
Drain openers
Paints, latex, and oil-based products
Paint thinners
Household batteries
Weed killers
HHW items should be placed in a leak-proof container with labels and caps in tact if possible. Also, items should be stored in a cool, dry place until collection day.
HHW must be disposed of properly to avoid injury to sanitation workers, contamination of septic tanks and wastewater treatment facilities, and environmental contamination of the soil, surface water and groundwater.
For more information, please contact Nash County's recycling coordinator or solid waste office.
