Public Meeting Scheduled On Putnam Mine

RALEIGH - The Division of Land Resources is holding a public meeting on Tuesday, August 29, 7 p.m. at the Avery County Courthouse to receive comments on Clark Stone Company's proposed modifications to its permit for the Putnam Mine.

The company is proposing modifications in its operations to address concerns, such as noise and visual impacts, related to the mine's proximity to the Appalachian Trail. The division will consider the public's comments when deciding whether to modify or revoke the permit.

Information on the mine, including the permit, requests to modify it, and reports by acoustical experts and landscape architects, will be available for public review in room 109 of the Avery County Courthouse Annex in Newland from August 28 through September 1.

The quarry is about two miles from the Appalachian Trail. After the permit was issued on May 14 of last year, the department received many comments from people who were concerned about the visual and noise impacts of the quarry on the trail. In response to these concerns, the division held a public meeting on March 16 and on April 19 issued a letter of intent to revoke the permit. Clark Stone Company has proposed certain modifications to its permit to reduce the effects of the quarry on the purposes of the Appalachian Trail. The division will make a decision on the permit by the end of September.
