DENR Solicits Public Input On Chip Mill Study

RALEIGH - The N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources will accept public input until August 31 on the recently released study on the environmental and economic impacts of chip mills in the state.

The agency is reviewing the document, titled "Economic and Ecological Impacts Associated with Wood Chip Production in North Carolina," and will be making recommendations on policy changes to Governor Jim Hunt. DENR will consider the comments it receives as it formulates the recommendations.

A team of scientists from N.C. State University and Duke University last week released the two-year study commissioned by Hunt in response to public concerns about the loss of forest lands due to chip mill production.

The study is available on the Internet at: http://taxodium.env.duke.edu/scsf. People interested in providing comments should e-mail them to: denr-chipmills@ncmail.net or send written comments to Dan McLawhorn, DENR General Counsel, N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources, 1601 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, N.C. 27699-1601.
