N.C. Zoo Television Series Wins Second National Award
ASHEBORO—The Zoo FileZ, a syndicated weekly television series produced by the North Carolina Zoological Park, has
received its second national video production award.
The zoo series last week was named a recipient of “The Award of Distinction” in The Videographer Awards 2000
competition. The Zoo FileZ was selected for the honor among 2,386 entries from throughout the United States and several
foreign countries.
According to officials with The Videographer Awards, the zoo series was selected by a panel of video experts “for projects
that clearly exceed industry standards.” Based in Arlington, Texas, The Videographer Awards is a national organization aimed
at helping set the standards for the video production industry.
In January, The Zoo FileZ also was selected for the 1999 “Communicator Award” for video production. The zoo series has
been in production for more than a year and airs on broadcast stations in six of North Carolina’s largest television markets. The
two-minute video features focus on the zoo, its staff, animal and plant collections, special events, conservation and education
programs.
The series is written and co-produced by N.C. Zoo Public Relations Manager Rod Hackney, who also serves as on-camera
host for the program. Director of photography and co-producer for the series is Terry Shiels of Shiels Video Productions with
editing by Mike Patterson of Wide Screen Antics, both of Charlotte, N.C.. The series airs primarily during morning news
programs, on WLOS-TV in Asheville, WBTV-TV in Charlotte, WGHP-TV in High Point, WRAL-TV in Raleigh, WNCT-TV
in Greenville and WECT-TV in Wilmington.
