N.C. Zoo Vet Speaker At Russian Animal Conference
ASHEBORO - The chief veterinarian at the North Carolina Zoological Park, Dr. Michael Loomis, has recently returned from an
international conference in Voronova, Russia, at which he was one of eight veterinarians asked to speak.
Loomis spoke on primate medicine at the weeklong conference. Four other veterinarians from the United States, two from Great
Britain and one from South Africa also spoke.
The international conference, funded by the International Fund for Animal Welfare and the Trust for Mutual Understanding, was
held to help raise zoo standards in Russia and the former Soviet republics. The conference was the first of what delegates hope will
be an annual event, according to Loomis.
The zoo is an agency of the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources, William G. Ross Jr., Secretary; Michael F.
Easley, Governor.
Editor's Note: Dr. Loomis is available to talk to news media representatives about the trip. To arrange an interview,
